Alex Morton is a British artist whose work is inspired by Cornwall’s rugged north coast and he donates a percentage from the sale of his work to environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.

“As a surfer, it’s the surf, sea and wind that inspire me most,” he says.

It’s hard to believe from looking at his work, but Alex Morton came unexpectedly to painting as recently as 2012. An art teacher friend got him to pick up a paint brush to cheer himself up on a dull day. He discovered an immediate talent and compulsion for painting, and has never looked back.

In particular, he enjoys the surprising nature of the process. While he takes inspiration from the topography of the north Cornwall coast, the excitement for him as an artist lies in not knowing how each painting will turn out until it’s done.

“It is the rugged coastline, the expanse of the sea and the energy it brings through the wind and the waves that relaxes me and draws me,” he says.

“I work on a variety of surfaces, including canvas, paper and board and I mainly paint with my surface lying directly on the floor, especially the larger pieces.

“Many of my paintings on canvas start as sheet canvas, which I later stretch.”
